Tax-free salaries, a fast-growing job market and a four-hour flight to Istanbul have made Dubai one of the most popular destinations abroad for Turkish professionals, entrepreneurs and families. Household removals to Dubai, however, differ from a European move in two ways: the goods travel by sea in a container rather than by road, and UAE customs ties the duty-free entry of household goods to a residence visa and Emirates ID. REG Transport ships household goods to Dubai by sea container, delivering door to door in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman for both household moves and commercial logistics. This guide explains FCL and LCL options, the 35-45 day process, customs documents, prohibited items, climate-proof packing and what drives the price.
How Goods Reach Dubai: Sea Freight and Container Options
A road route from Turkey to the UAE through Iraq and Saudi Arabia is technically possible, but for household goods the safe and economical route is by sea. Your consignment is loaded at the port in Turkey, passes through the Suez Canal and arrives at Dubai's main port, Jebel Ali.
| FCL (full container) | LCL (shared container) | |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | 20' DC: ~28 m³ (2-3 bedroom home); 40' HC: ~65 m³ (large home plus a car) | 2-15 m³ (studio or one-bedroom flat, partial loads) |
| Pricing | Fixed per container | Per m³ |
| Loading | Container brought to your address or loaded at our Istanbul depot | Consolidated at our depot, deconsolidated at a Dubai warehouse |
| Transit | Port to port 18-25 days; door to door 35-45 days | Door to door 35-45 days including consolidation |
| Customs | One declaration per container | Separate declaration per consignment |
The 35-45 day door-to-door figure covers packing, inland haulage to port, waiting for the vessel, the sea leg, customs at Jebel Ali and delivery within Dubai. For urgent, small shipments we arrange air freight (3-7 days), but as volume grows sea freight is far more economical.

UAE Customs: Duty-Free Entry of Household Goods
The standard UAE customs duty is 5%; however, used household goods of people arriving to take up residence are exempt under certain conditions. Dubai Customs requires:
- A valid UAE residence visa (in the passport or as an e-visa) and an Emirates ID or Emirates ID application receipt. Household goods cannot be cleared on a tourist visa, so the shipment must be timed to the visa process.
- A passport copy and a signed packing list in English, listing the contents of every carton.
- The bill of lading, original or telex release.
- A list of electronics with brand, model and serial numbers.
- Proof of residence in Dubai: a tenancy contract (Ejari) or an employer's letter.
The goods must be personal, used and in reasonable quantities; new, invoiced items and commercial quantities attract the 5% duty. The declaration is lodged through a customs agent in Dubai; the customer only provides the documents. See our customs clearance page for detailed support.
Prohibited and Restricted Items for Dubai
UAE import rules differ markedly from Europe's; ignoring the list below leaves the container stuck at customs and can lead to fines:
- Strictly prohibited: alcohol (including personal quantities; it is not carried in a household container), pork products, narcotics and certain prescription medicines (such as codeine and tramadol; check the UAE Ministry of Health list), weapons and ammunition, gambling equipment, pornographic material, goods of Israeli origin.
- Subject to approval: drones and radio equipment (TDRA approval), satellite receivers, some religious publications, large quantities of medicine (with prescription).
- Restricted: e-cigarettes and tobacco (tax and quantity limits), live plants and soil, food (must be packaged, labelled and dated).
- Not recommended: electrical appliances are fine because Turkey's 220 V matches the UAE; but candles, cosmetics and plastics can deform after weeks in a container above 40 °C.
Packing for the Gulf Climate
In summer a container crossing the Suez Canal and the Gulf can reach internal temperatures of 60 °C with high humidity. On the Dubai corridor we therefore add measures to our standard packing: wooden furniture and leather sofas travel with desiccant sachets, electronics and books in vacuum or moisture-barrier wrapping, pianos and antiques in climate-controlled crates. Desiccant bags are placed inside the container and the load is secured with straps and chocks. See our inventory and packing guide for the standards.
The Process Step by Step
- Survey and quote: volume assessment at home or by video call; FCL/LCL decision; fixed-price quotation.
- Documents: we align the shipping date with your visa and Emirates ID timeline; the packing list is prepared in English.
- Packing and loading: our crew packs at your home; the container is loaded at your address or at our Istanbul depot and sealed.
- Turkish export customs and vessel: export declaration, delivery to port, loading on board; the bill of lading is sent to you.
- Sea transit: 18-25 days; you track the container with its tracking number.
- Customs at Jebel Ali: the declaration is lodged and the exemption applied.
- Delivery in Dubai: the container or LCL consignment is brought to your address; furniture is reassembled and packing removed. In high-rise buildings the service lift booking and the building's move-in permit are arranged in advance.
Delivery in Dubai and the Other Emirates
- Dubai: towers in Dubai Marina, JLT, Downtown, Business Bay and JVC require a move-in permit from building management, a service-lift slot and sometimes a deposit; delivery day is planned around them. Villa communities such as Arabian Ranches, Jumeirah and Mirdif are more flexible.
- Abu Dhabi: 1.5 hours from Jebel Ali; we deliver regularly to Al Reem Island, Khalifa City and Saadiyat. Goods for Abu Dhabi residents can still be cleared at Jebel Ali.
- Sharjah and Ajman: neighbouring Dubai; same-day delivery is planned. Some areas of Sharjah have time restrictions for heavy vehicles.
Logistics to Dubai: Commercial Freight and Furniture
The same container service covers the commercial logistics needs of Turkish manufacturers and Turkish-owned businesses in the UAE. We ship new furniture for hotel, restaurant and office projects in Dubai and commercial freight such as textiles, food and building materials; these attract 5% duty and 5% VAT and are declared with a certificate of origin and invoice. Goods destined for Dubai's free zones (JAFZA, DMCC) enter duty-free. For cars from Turkey our vehicle transport page explains RoRo and container options; the UAE requires GCC-specification compliance and generally a vehicle under ten years old.
What Determines the Price
- Container type and volume: a 20' container is the standard for a three-bedroom home; LCL is charged per m³.
- Port and season: ocean freight rates move with developments on the Suez route and with the season, which is why quotes have a limited validity.
- Loading address: bringing the container to your door (which may need a city permit and a crane) is priced differently from loading at the depot.
- Delivery conditions in Dubai: tower delivery, service lift, villa community.
- Insurance: all-risk cover is strongly recommended for sea freight (CMR vs all-risk).
- Storage: storage in Istanbul or Dubai while waiting for the visa.
The general cost components are explained in what determines the cost of an international move.
Example Scenario: A Two-Bedroom Home from Istanbul to Dubai Marina
22 m³ from a two-bedroom flat in Kadıköy is packed and loaded into a 20' container at our Istanbul depot. The goods wait two weeks in storage until the family's visa is issued; the container then ships and reaches Jebel Ali in 21 days. It clears duty-free with the Emirates ID application receipt and the Ejari contract, is delivered in the booked service-lift slot at the Marina tower and the furniture is reassembled. 41 days from loading to delivery.

Can I ship my household goods to Dubai on a tourist visa?
You can ship them, but clearing customs requires a residence visa and an Emirates ID (or application receipt). We time the arrival at port to your visa schedule and hold the goods in storage if needed.
Is customs duty payable on household goods in Dubai?
Used household goods of residence-visa holders are exempt; new items and commercial goods attract 5% duty and 5% VAT.
Can I bring alcohol or prescription medicine?
Alcohol is not carried in a household container. For medicines, check the UAE Ministry of Health's controlled list and obtain a prescription and approval where required.
